2007/2008 Background: Harpenden Writers was formed ten years ago by a group of local writers. They had been attending a WEA creative writing class but when the course was discontinued they carried on meeting up in each other’s homes. In the summer of 1997 the group decided to form a society for members and guests to get together once a month in a meeting room at the United Reformed Church. Harpenden Writers currently have more than 30 members. Aims: The aim of the society is to encourage and inspire its members to write - be it for pleasure or for publication. Meetings feature Readarounds and Guest Speakers, alternately. At a Readaround, members take it in turns to read their own work-in-progress aloud for feedback and constructive criticism. Guest Speakers are usually established, published authors, journalists, poets, or editors and publishers.
